o Amniotic tissue is the innermost layer of the placenta, rich in healing proteins and anti-inflammatory cells. This tissue is donated (with full consent) from healthy mothers after childbirth and is carefully processed to ensure safety. Your provider will gently apply the graft to your wound during a home visit. There is no surgery involved, and the process is safe and well-tolerated.
o Amniotic membrane skin grafts have several unique properties that make them excellent for chronic wound care, including:
If you have a chronic wound, or a wound that has not responded to and failed to heal from conservative treatments in 30 days or longer, you could be a candidate.
Amniotic tissue comes from the innermost layer of the placenta — the same protective covering that surrounds and supports a baby during pregnancy. This tissue has natural healing properties and has been used safely in medical treatments to support wound healing.
When used as a graft (a special type of wound covering), this tissue is placed over a chronic wound to help the body repair itself.
Amniotic tissue grafts are especially helpful for chronic or hard-to-heal wounds (like diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, or surgical wounds) because they bring healing tools your body may need a boost with.
Here’s how:
🛡️ Protective Barrier
It creates a clean, protective layer over the wound — like a natural bandage — helping reduce the risk of infection and keeping the area moist (which is good for healing).
💧 Moist Healing Environment
Amniotic tissue helps maintain the right level of moisture at the wound site. This keeps the wound from drying out and helps new skin cells grow more easily.
⚙️Growth Factors
It’s rich in growth factors — natural proteins that tell your body to build new tissue, reduce inflammation, and close the wound faster.
🌿 Anti-inflammatory
It naturally calms inflammation, which can help reduce pain and swelling in the wound area.
🦠 Anti-scarring & Anti-microbial
Amniotic tissue may help reduce scar tissue formation and contains properties that can fight off bacteria.
💡 Supports Regeneration
It contains cells that support tissue regeneration, helping your body grow strong, healthy skin and blood vessels where damage has occurred.
Yes. All donated amniotic tissue is carefully screened and processed to ensure it is sterile and safe. It’s been used in medicine for years, including in eye surgery and wound care.
Healing a wound takes more than time — your body needs the right nutrients to rebuild tissue, fight infection, and close the wound properly. Poor nutrition can delay or even prevent proper healing, especially in chronic wounds.
🔑 Key Nutrients for Healing
🧬 Protein: Essential for building new tissue and maintaining your immune system.
Sources: Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, nuts.
🍊 Vitamin C: Helps form collagen, the protein that gives skin strength and flexibility, and supports immune health.
Sources: Citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli.
🩸 Zinc: Important for tissue growth, immune support, and wound repair.
Sources: Meat, shellfish, legumes, whole grains, seeds.
🧲 Iron: Carries oxygen to tissues. Low iron can slow healing.
Sources: Red meat, spinach, beans, iron-fortified cereals.
💧 Fluids: Hydration helps your cells work better and supports circulation to the wound area.
🍽️ Calories (Energy): Your body needs extra energy to heal — especially after surgery or injury. Undereating slows everything down.
💊 Supplements That May Support Wound Healing
For people with poor appetite, nutrient gaps, or chronic wounds, supplements may help. Below are clinically supported options often recommended:
✅ Arginine: An amino acid that boosts blood flow and supports collagen production.
Research: Studies show arginine supplementation improves pressure ulcer healing, especially when combined with other nutrients.
✅ Glutamine: Supports immune cells and helps maintain tissue strength during stress or injury.
Research: Clinical trials show glutamine can reduce wound complications after surgery or trauma.
✅ Zinc: Low zinc levels can delay wound healing. Supplementation may help when levels are low.
Caution: Too much zinc can interfere with copper absorption — should be used under medical guidance.
✅ Vitamin C: Supplementing can speed up healing in people with low levels or high wound burden.
Dose range often used: 500–1,000 mg daily.
✅ Multivitamin with Minerals: A balanced multivitamin may support overall healing in people with multiple deficiencies, although it is always better to get your nutrients through whole foods.
✅ Specialized Medical Nutrition Formulas: Products like Juven® or Arginaid® contain blends of arginine, glutamine, collagen, and micronutrients shown to support wound healing in clinical trials.
🩺 Ask Your Provider: Always talk to your healthcare provider or wound care team before starting any supplements — especially if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or are on medications.
Better nutrition = better healing. Even small changes in your diet or supplement routine can make a big difference in how your wound heals.
